What is an MRL and why it is worth it

The MRL (free-wheel hub mechanism) allows you to disengage the front wheels from the axle shafts. Basically, when you drive in 4x2, the front wheels no longer drive the drivetrain (axle shafts – front differential – front driveshaft).

The result: less wear on transmission components, reduced vibrations, less rolling resistance, and, in many cases, better fuel consumption on long trips.

Particularly useful for part-time 4x4

On vehicles with part-time 4x4, using 4x4 on the road can generate high stress in the transmission. Shifting the transfer case lever from 4x4 to 4x2 helps, but does not completely eliminate the problem, as the front wheels continue to spin certain components. With MRLs, you can reduce this unnecessary rotation when conditions permit.

Recommendations for use

For road use, when you do not need front-wheel drive, you drive with the MRLs disengaged. When entering difficult terrain and you need 4x4, you manually engage the MRLs, then use 4x4 from the transfer case.
